How to rip a DVD video

Recently I spent quite a few days to manage all my media files (Video, Musics and Pictures). Over the past a few years, these media files ate over 50GB of my hard drive space. So I had to buy a external hard drive to store thesefiles.

During the next a few days, I would like to write about how I manage these files.

Today, I would like to show you how to rip a DVD video.

Hardware Requirements:
1) A DVD Burner

Software Requirements
1) Download and Install DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0: http://www.mrbass.org/dvdrip/
2) Download and Install DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15
3) Install Nero 6.6.0.5

Steps to Rip:
1) DVD -> Hard drive using DVD Decrypter
In order to avoid the error "dvd shrink data error (cyclic redundancy check)", which means that the source disk has scratches.
I'd like you to check your DVD Decrypter's settings. First, it should be version 3.5.1.0. Go to "Tools", "Settings", set everything to "Default". Then in the "General" tab change, "Removal Method" from "Normal" to "Aggressive", in "File Mode", "tick" Remove PUO's." For ripping in the "ISO Read Mode", "tick" "Remove PUO's" there also. in the "CSS" tab, under "CSS Cracking Method", choose "Brute Force ~> I/O Key Exchange" and "On Failure" choose "Yes". . IMPORTANT: In the "I / O" tab, in the bottom right, "tick" the box which says, "Ignore read errors". This is an excellent setting for dealing with scratched discs which may cause ripping problems.

If you don't want to wait forever when the disk read error happens, set the retry to 0 and tick the ignore read error.

If any of the DVD file is not ripped completely, that part may not record correctly.

2) (Optional, it is need only when the source disk is DVD9 - double layer 8.5 GB)
***DVD Shrink has very good integration with Nero, and it should be a better choice as a backup tool than DVD Decryptor.
**** In term of speed, DVD Decryptor is faster than the DVD Shrink and with better error correction. So if the source disk is DVD5, we should use DVD Decryptor.

One how to split one DVD9 to 2 DVD5 disk, refer to http://www.dvd-guides.com/content/view/48/59
If you get an image file (iso) from DVD Decrypter, you should use DVD Shrink to reprocess it.

3) Nero: burn the DVD-Video
The important thing here is you should pu *ALL* all your files under VIDEO_TS folder.

Some comments:
The disk I ripped seem to have some scratches and I skip one of the vob file because it took too long to skip those errors. And the nero warned me about this, but I still continued. The DVD-VIDEO still burned correctly, just missing the part I ingored.

Good Luck!
